Statistics Sometimes Falsified by Chinese Local Governments, NBS Official Says

(Yicai Global) Dec. 8 -- Statistics released by the Chinese government have always been questioned by external parties. Some local governments falsified statistics from time to time against laws and regulations, Ning Jizhe, commissioner of China's National Bureau of Statistics said.

The local government in Heihe, Helongjiang Province in Northeast China, inflated investments by CNY1.9 billion, accounting for 8.5 percent of the city's total for the whole year, a government report found in 2015.

China has investigated a number of statistics falsification cases recently and imposed administrative penalties on the organizations responsible. Party disciplinary measures were also given to erring government officials, wrote Ning in an article for People's Daily, the Chinese government's official newspaper.

Ning called on relevant parties to speed up the formulation of the Implementation Regulations for the Statistics Law, which will provide a comprehensive legislative basis for statistics work.
