(Yicai Global) Dec. 14 -- Government inspections have found that even high-priced health food products designed to help people lose weight that were bought online may contain unlawfully added drugs.
Shenzhen Municipal Market Supervision Administration Bureau said yesterday that it had recently seized 76 batches of such products suspected of having been made illegally. Nearly 80 percent were found to contain illegally added drugs.
To date, 18 arrests have been made and the bureau seized nearly 2,000 boxes of health food products, with a total value of more than CNY2 million (USD290,000).
In early November, the bureau and the local public security agency conducted surprise inspections of e-commerce traders suspected of forging product information. According to the Shenzhen Institute for Drug Control, 59 of the 76 batches, or 77.6 percent, contained sibutramine, phenolphthalein, furosemide and other prohibited drugs.
