City Dwellers in China Earn 2.72 Times More than Rural Workers, CASS Says

(Yicai Global) April 21 -- Farmers’ per capita disposable income will surpass CNY13,000 (USD1,888) this year, with the value for rural residents at 2.72 times less than urban residents, according to data from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

Farmer’s salaries and transfer income will continue to grow rapidly this year, though it will be difficult to raise rural incomes given the falling price of grains, Beijing News quoted Li Guoxiang, a research at CASS’ Rural Development Institute and co-author of the report, as saying.

“Though China’s economic growth has slowed since 2014 and farmers’ salary gains have declined, it’s still rising,” Li said. “Their average monthly wages are expected to reach CNY3,450 this year.”

Li projected the total number of migrant workers to grow steadily to 287 million people this year, up 1.8 percent from last year.
