Baidu Wangpan to Require Real-Name Authentication Starting June, Will Close Unverified Accounts



(Yicai Global) May 11 -- Cloud storage services provided by Chinese internet mammoth Baidu Inc. [NASDAQ:BIDU] will soon require real-name user authentication.

This move demonstrates China’s has further progress in implementing real-time administration of Internet users.

Baidu cloud drive users must verify their accounts by registering a mobile phone number by June 1, per the Internet Security Law of the People 's Republic of China, Baidu said yesterday. It added that one phone number may be used to verify multiple accounts. Accounts without mobile phone verification will be closed forcibly after June 1, the statement stressed.

Cloud drive services internet firms provide offer netizens access to huge cloud storage space, but some anonymous accounts infringe legal and regulatory standards. The government has intensified its regulation of cloud drive services since last year, penalizing some businesses and ordering others to cease offering such services. Baidu Wangpan -- formerly known as Baidu Cloud -- is a cloud storage service Baidu operates which allows users to upload documents to an online drive for viewing and sharing at any time BY various terminals.
