(Yicai Global) May 13 -- Chinese President Xi Jinping today met with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, who is visiting China to attend the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation, at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse.

Xi indicated that the China-Greece tradition of friendship and cooperation would continue to thrive, and political trust between the two nations has further deepened, People’s Daily reported. Practical cooperation in economic and trade investment and infrastructure construction has been positive, with cultural exchanges being rich and colorful, the Chinese leader added.

This year marks 45 years since China and Greece set up diplomatic relations, and the pair should use this as an opportunity to create a more promising future for their strategic partnership, Xi said. China is prepared to keep up high-level exchanges with the European country and promote closer interaction between different levels of authority within the governments.

Both should push the balanced development of bilateral trade and as important representative of eastern and western civilizations, should give full play to their advantages of profound cultural heritage and make full use of the Ancient Civilizations Forum, a new platform set up to enhance dialogue and communication between different societies. China and the EU should expand practical cooperation and maintain a free and open multilateral trade system, and China hopes that Greece will continue to make positive contributions to the long-term healthy and stable development of China-EU relations.

Greece’s International Logistics Hub strategy and China’s One Belt, One Road initiative are a good fit, said Xi. The two countries should look to build the Piraeus Port into an important container transit port in the Mediterranean region and international logistics distribution center, to play a key role in the China-Europe Land-Sea Express Line and Belt and Road strategy. The port should also drive more in-depth and practical bilateral cooperation in infrastructure construction, energy, telecommunications and marine and other fields to further benefit both countries, Xi added.

Greece and China are both ancient civilizations, said Tsipras, adding that both should strive to advance pragmatic cooperation in a wide range of areas, such as economy, investment, finance, energy, agriculture and new technologies as well as develop Piraeus Port. Greece is pleased to be part of the Belt and Road construction and believes the initiative is forward-looking, significant and conducive to the interconnection and intercommunication of economy, trade, energy, transportation and networking in Asia and Europe. His country wants to help strengthen China’s cooperation with central and eastern European countries and even Europe as a whole.
