(Yicai Global) Jan. 3 -- Sixty-two cities in north China have activated air pollution alerts in response to unrelenting smog, the Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP) said. Of these, 25 are on red alert and 22 at orange, including Beijing and Tianjin.
The latest MEP data shows cities still at code red include Shijiazhuang, Hebei province, Jinan, Shandong province, Zhengzhou, Henan province and Linfen in Shanxi. Cities in other areas -- including Xi'an in Shaanxi province -- have upgraded their alert status to red, while Xianyang and seven other cities maintained orange levels.
The organization named and shamed some enterprises for violating such regulations as production suspensions or restrictions, and for failing to reduce emissions in line with emergency plans on heavily-polluted days.
Monitoring crews the MEP deployed found frequent illegal pollutant emissions at provincial borders where small enterprises cluster.
