A-Share Market Expects to Welcome Wave of Unicorns, China's Securities Regulator Says A-Share Market Expects to Welcome Wave of Unicorns, China's Securities Regulator Says

(Yicai Global) Feb. 1 -- China's A-share market will commit to developing a group tech startups worth over USD1 billion, known as unicorns, or, and push to bring home companies listed overseas.

This was the most important message to come from the 2018 Work Conference of China Securities Regulatory Commission System, which was held in Beijing recently, China Securities Journal reported.

"The regulator should take serving national strategies and building a modern economic system as a guide," the conference's press release states. "[It should] learn from the international capital markets' mature, effective and beneficial systems and methods and reform the issuance and listing system to make the system more tolerable and adaptable and to give more support to new technologies and new industries."

Many enterprises use the variable interest entity structure and have over 200 shareholders, corporate representatives said earlier this month, when Zhang Shenfeng, assistant chairman of the China Securities Regulatory Commission, visited the capital's Zhongguancun Science Park. Under the current system, it is difficult for these companies to list on the A-share market. It limits company development and prevents domestic investors from enjoying the opportunity to share innovative achievements.

All market participants should share a common goal of keeping promising companies at home, getting well-developed companies to list as soon as possible and ensuring investors get more rewards, Zhang said.

The CSRC expects to strengthen its role in supervising stock exchanges, managing institutions and trading and preventing risks in key areas, such as the regional equity market and illegal securities and futures trading.

In terms of secondary market investments, fighting against high leverage and market manipulation remain priorities. CSRC spokeswoman Gao Li said the commission will follow Central Party Committee and State Council policies to ensure sound development of the capital market and maintain a tough stance on manipulation and other illegal behavior.
