AI Needs Global Control, Geopolitical Spats Must Be Overcome, Tencent's Pony Ma Says AI Needs Global Control, Geopolitical Spats Must Be Overcome, Tencent's Pony Ma Says

(Yicai Global) Aug. 29 -- Global governance and cooperation is essential to the development of artificial intelligence. The industry must find ways to overcome technological competition, trade disputes and geopolitical conflicts, according to the founder of Tencent Holdings.

"No country today owns all the resources, technologies and capabilities required for a new technological and industrial revolution," Pony Ma said at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference 2019 which opened in Shanghai today. "Industry separation and technological disconnection will harm the long-term interests of the entire human race."

Smart technology needs to show the positive power of science and technology, maintain a bottom line for ethics and morality and form a code of ethical self-discipline for the industry and businesses, said Ma, who is also the tech giant's chairman and chief executive.

Tencent has an AI research matrix, including Tencent AI Lab based in Shenzhen and Seattle as well as WeChat AI, that covers robot, quantum computing, fifth-generation wireless mobile networks, edge computing, Internet of Things and audio and video technologies, he said.

The Shenzhen-based firm is pushing the integration of AI with different sectors. "This will give the sector promising prospects and allow for a period of rapid growth in the next decade," Ma said.

Smart medicine is a special focus and Tencent has built the first batch of new generation AI platforms for medical imaging in China.

As the world's biggest gaming company, Tencent has developed an AI robot called Consciousness that can play its highly popular war game King of Glory. "AI can outperform humans in King of Glory, a game with a decision complexity of 20,000 times to the power 10," he said.

"This shows that if we use AI to simulate human behavior in computer games that pretend to be real, AI's generalized adoption in the real world is possible," he added.
