(Yicai Global) March 13 -- Apple Inc.'s [NASDAQ:AAPL] Siri voice assistant will support Shanghainese, Shanghai's local dialect, in iOS 10.3, said Alex Acero, voice team supervisor at Apple, in an interview. Competition in the market stiffened after Google announced that Google Assistant was "coming to more Android phones" last month.
Adding another language to Siri's repertoire was a long process, Acero told Reuters. Apple's voice platform will improve its understanding of words with machine learning.
Siri can identify 21 languages localized for 36 countries, giving it the leading position in the voice assistant market. Microsoft Corp.'s [NASDAQ:MSFT] voice assistant Cortana and Alphabet Inc.'s [NASDAQ:GOOGL] Google Assistant can identify 8 languages localized for 13 countries and 4 languages, respectively. Amazon.com Inc.'s [NASDAQ: AMZN] Alexa is able to recognize English and German only.
