(CBN - Global)July 12 -- Apple Inc. has dropped to fifth place in China's smartphone market, below domestic brands such as Huawei Technologies Co. and Oppo Electronics Corp., according to a May report by Counterpoint Technology Market Research.
Four Chinese brands, Huawei, Oppo, Vivo Electronics Corp. and Xiaomi Inc., have a combined market share of 53 percent, the report shows. Huawei tops the list with a 17.3 percent market share and Oppo has recently doubled its share to 11 percent. Apple's market share has fallen to 10.8 percent, down 1.2 percentage points year-on-year.
Apple reported a drop in revenue in the first quarter, the first drop in its earnings since 2013 and the first decline in iPhone sales ever. In greater China, including the special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macao, Apple's operating income plunged 26 percent year-on-year.
To add to Apple's woes, the company is facing litigation in China. Last month, the Beijing Intellectual Property Office ruled that its iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus smartphones infringed on patents owned by a Chinese company and ordered Apple to stop selling the products in China.
