(Yicai Global) Aug.10 -- Baidu Inc.'s [NASDAQ:BIDU] chief research and development architect and chief designer of its Institute of Deep Learning has departed the Internet giant, the Beijing-based company told Yicai Global yesterday.
Mr. Gu Jiawei will join Netposa Technologies Ltd. [SHE:300367] as vice president, Baidu said. He joins other former Baidu IDL members who have left to start up their own businesses or joined other Internet firms, people familiar with the matter said.
An expert in the field noted that the artificial intelligence boom sparked by Google DeepMind's AI system AlphaGo has made professionals with AI expertise highly sought after.
Mr. Yu Kai, founder and former executive vice president of IDL, quit to establish Horizon Robotics Inc. along with IDL's chief architect Mr. Huang Chang. Mr. Ni Kaize, former head of Baidu's driverless vehicles team, departed for LeEco, the brand name of Leshi Internet Information & Technology Corp. [SHE:300104].
IDL was Baidu's first research institute, with teams in Beijing, Shenzhen and Silicon Valley. Mr. Gu was responsible for the innovation and application of artificial intelligence and human-computer interaction technology. Baidu is focusing on intelligent wearable devices and transport systems, smart homes, robotics and other software and hardware based on AI.
