Beijing Continues to Maintain Lowest Energy Consumption Rates and Energy Intensity Nationwide Beijing Continues to Maintain Lowest Energy Consumption Rates and Energy Intensity Nationwide

(Yicai Global) July 27 -- Beijing's energy consumption per CNY10,000 (USD1,486) of GDP was equivalent to 0.2835 tons of standard coal in 2016, the lowest level nationwide, according to the latest statistics.

The "2016 Beijing Municipal Bulletin on Energy Consumption and Water Consumption," jointly issued by Beijing Municipal Bureau of Statistics, Beijing Municipal Commission of Development and Reform and Beijing Water Authority yesterday, indicates that Beijing's energy consumption per CNY10,000 of GDP in 2016 fell 4.79 percent year-on-year to 0.2835 tons of standard coal if calculated at the 2015 comparable prices, representing the lowest level for China. Its water consumption per CNY10,000 of GDP was 15.8 cubic meters in the year, a year-on-year drop of 4.79 percent.

The figures imply that Beijing has successfully achieved its goal to cut both annual total energy consumption and energy intensity in 2016. China's capital city's total energy consumption picked up 1.6 percent year-on-year to 69.6 million tons of standard coal in 2016, remaining at a low level compared to the annual control target of 71 million tons of standard coal, the municipal Bulletin said.

Beijing continued to lead other regions of the country in terms of energy utilization efficiency. Based on 2015 comparable price, the year-on-year decrease in Beijing's energy consumption represents 1.29 percentage points higher than the target set for the decline in annual energy consumption per CNY10,000 of GDP.

Although Beijing has leading energy utilization efficiency in China, it still far lags behind developed countries in this regard, Zhou Rui, director of the division of energy and resources statistics of Beijing Municipal Bureau of Statistics, told Yicai Global.

When interpreting the Bulletin, Qian Yan, deputy inspector of Beijing Municipal Bureau of Statistics, indicated that the highlights of the decline in energy consumption in 2016 include significant achievements in energy consumption reduction brought by effective regulation and mitigation, continuously optimized energy structure arising from the implementation of the clean air action plan, and slowed growth of energy consumption for the tertiary industry and residents living.
