(Yicai Global) July 23 -- Beijing allocated some 10,000 public rental houses and handed out related subsidies to about 2,600 households in the first half of this year, fulfilling 84 percent of its goal to allocate some 15,000 such leases this year, Beijing Morning Post reported the municipal housing commission as saying.

The quick uptake was driven by the capital's adoption of an online registration system that the need for applicants to line up on site as well as the set up of a system to distribute public rental housing to households quickly through automatically sorting registered households based on certain criteria.

Beijing has also rolled out a facial recognition system for public rental houses to strengthen oversight and ensure the fair use of public resources. It has installed the system at 39 housing projects, collecting more than 20,000 pieces of information.

The city also employs QR codes to provide housing information, which can help it accurately capture housing data, collect rents, and provide property services.

The capital is also improving its affordable housing schemes, stepping up efforts to study and improve rental subsidy policies, as well as further lowering requirements for receiving subsidies, a representative of the commission said.
