Beijing to Open Major Expressway for Self-Driving Tests Next Year

(Yicai Global) Oct. 19 -- Beijing plans to open up the Yanchong Expressway, which will connect the capital with Hebei province for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games, for autonomous driving tests next year.

The city will also build an Internet of Vehicles using 5G mobile networks to cover its most important areas by 2020, local newspaper the Beijing Daily reported, citing a government whitepaper. And will built an integrated network of intelligent cars capable of supporting level 4 autonomous driving -- those that can operate under limit conditions without human input.

The highway is an important link between Beijing and Zhangjiakou, a city in Hebei, as it will serve as a channel between stadiums in the two cities at the Winter Games. It is expected to open at the end of next year.

Several Chinese cities have opened up public roads for autonomous vehicle tests, and while Beijing was not the first, it does have the largest network of streets open for testing. Some 123 kilometers of tarmac are available for the evaluation of self-driving cars, including main roads in the city as well as in industrial parks so that assessments can cover a range of road conditions, according to the whitepaper.

As of Oct. 17, road tests had covered over 63,000 kilometers without resulting in a single accident or otherwise negatively affecting traffic, it added.
