Bike-Sharing Offers Jobs to 100,000 People in China, State Information Center Says Bike-Sharing Offers Jobs to 100,000 People in China, State Information Center Says

(Yicai Global) Sept. 12 -- China's ever-expanding bike-sharing industry has created jobs for 100,000 people, according to the latest research report from the State Information Center, a government think tank affiliated with the National Development and Reform Commission.

In the first half of this year, the industry offered new jobs to nearly 70,000 people, making up 0.98 percent of the total new urban working population over the same period. That means almost one in every 100 new job posts is in bike-sharing, online media outlet 36Kr reported.

The sector keeps 50 percent of employees at smart lock makers in work. The investigation shows that at lock makers in Shanghai, Shenzhen, Hangzhou and Zhongshan, workers making smart locks make up about 52.04 percent of all staff on production lines.

Bike-sharing is also responsible for keeping 80 percent of staff at traditional bike manufacturers in a job. The large-scale demand of shared bikes has seen business surge for cycle makers while driving a transformation of the traditional bike manufacturing sector.

Shared cycling also adds more than 30,000 operations and maintenance posts, of which the young and middle-aged laborers under 40 make up 70 percent.

The report also investigated the average wage of bike-sharing employees. For lock research and development, the average monthly wage for engineers can reach CNY12,000 (USD1,839). Those involved in manufacturing the locks can earn up to CNY4,667 a month and those making bikes up to CNY4,442. For offline services, the monthly average income of logistics workers is CNY5,000 and for operations and maintenance staff the figure is CNY3,835.

There were 10 smart lock design and manufacturing firms, 23 bike makers cooperating with bike-sharing companies, 15 logistics enterprises and 20 labor management firms investigated in the report.
