Chengdu Tests World's First Overhead New Energy Tramway

(Yicai Global) Nov. 22 -- The world's first elevated new energy tramway went into trial operation yesterday in the western Chinese city of Chengdu. It offers another option for urban public transit, connecting traditional transportation hubs and traffic routes with tourist attractions.

The train is powered by a lithium battery pack and glides on a 1.4-kilometer line. As an innovative transit system independently developed by a Chinese company, its chief designer is Zhai Wanming, an academician at the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The designed speed of the train is 60 kilometers an hour, and every carriage is 18 meters long and 2.3 meters wide, and can carry 120 passengers. The project, located in the Southwest Airport Economic Development Zone in Shuangliu County, will test the technology and establish technical standards based on relevant data collected.

Zhongtang Aerial Tram Group has been responsible for research and development as well as investment. The tramway system was jointly developed by Southwest Jiaotong University, China Railway Liuyuan Group Co., CRRC Nanjing Puzhen Co., China Railway Baoji Bridge Group Co. and Shanghai Fitsco Co.
