(Yicai Global) Feb. 23 -- Geriatric care institutions in China have been developing and upgrading in the last five years to cope with the country’s graying populace.
The number of eldercare institutions in the country topped 144,600 in September, up twofold from 44,300 of the end of 2012, Xinhua News Agency reported yesterday, citing statistics from China's civil affairs ministry.
China has also improved its geriatric services after years of efforts, with 79 percent of all nursing homes nationwide provided medical services by the end of July.
China's population aged 60 and overreached 194 million by the end of 2012, making up 14 percent of the total. That number reached 230 million by the end of 2016, for 17 percent of the overall population. The number and proportion of the elderly show an upward trend each year, per the report.
