(Yicai Global) May 7 -- Construction of the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway has been progressing well, with the recent start of work on the construction work for various related tunnels and bridges, Economic Information Daily reported today, adding that the project, the first export contract for China’s high-speed rail tech, will help the whole West Java province to develop into a hub for health, pension, medical care and cultural entertainment sectors.
The project marks a milestone in cooperation between China and Indonesia amid the Belt and Road Initiative, President Xi Jinping’s 30- to 40-year plan to develop a vast network of infrastructure and trade routes spanning Africa, Asia and Europe.
China will spare no effort and make use of the best resources available to create the most modern and standard high-speed railway globally for the Indonesian people, said Lu Dongfu, general manager of China Railway Corp.
The 142-kilometer Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway will connect the capital Jakarta and its fourth-largest city Bandung within three years with a maximum speed of 350 kilometers per hour. The train will cut journey times from over three hours to a mere 40 minutes. It will also alleviate traffic congestion between Jakarta and Bandung, boosting commercial development and the tourist industry and contributing to the formation of a high-speed rail economic corridor.
Indonesia’s Minister for State-Owned Enterprises Rini Mariani Soemarno touted the project as the beginning of the two countries’ collaboration and expressed her hope to see further technical exchanges them in the field of high-speed railway.
The Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway uses China Standardized CR400 Series’ safe and reliable technologies featuring cutting-edge technology and mature operations. The project also includes custom designs to suit the local climate, railway routes, cultures and the people’s lifestyles.
The project will also include online ticket purchases, onboard wi-fi access and facial recognition-based boarding to provide the Indonesian people with convenient and comfortable travel experience. The railway will also be equipped with state-of-the-art earthquake monitoring and early-warning systems to heighten safety systems.
There are plans to accelerate current engineering works as well as land acquisition and resettlement, an official from the China Railway said. Project capital and bank loans are also in place as the construction requires. China and Indonesia will enhance cooperation to strengthen construction organization and management of the project as the two sides strive for a full-scale construction of the project as early as possible.
