(Yicai Global) April 4 -- Guangdong Oppo Mobile Telecommunications Corp., developer of China’s smartphone brand Oppo, has set up a research institute to carry out cutting-edge technology research on 5G mobile communications network, artificial intelligence, image processing and new materials.
Headquartered in Shenzhen, the southeastern Guangdong province, the Oppo research institute will have five branches located in Beijing, Shanghai, Dongguan, Guangdong, Yokohama in Japan and Silicon Valley in California, the US, reported news site Chinanews today.
Oppo will also enhance its cooperation with higher education institutions. It co-founded an AI joint laboratory with the US’s Stanford University and partnered with the New York University, University of Science and Technology Beijing and Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications in the field of 5G technology.
The establishment of the research institute in addition to the company’s current R&D system is a new investment for future business layout, the report said. By setting up different research offices and conducting flexible outbound cooperation, Oppo will lead the development and application of AI and 5G technologies and offer products with a combination of art and science, said Chen Mingyong, CEO of Oppo.
The research institute will continue to improve its capacity building and talent introduction work, drawing in global talents with forward-looking visions and academic backgrounds in the field of technology. It will also maintain close cooperation with scientific research agencies and higher-education institutions in China and other countries, said Liu Chang, head of the institute.
Established in 2004, Oppo targets young customers and offers outstanding camera functions in its smartphones. Shipment of the manufacturer reached 111.8 million last year, ranking fourth globally.
