China's Consumer Inflation Was 2.9% Last Year, Just Within Government Target China's Consumer Inflation Was 2.9% Last Year, Just Within Government Target

(Yicai Global) Jan. 9 -- China's consumer prices rose 2.9 percent last year, faster than in 2018 but within the government target despite African swine fever more than tripling the price of pork, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics published today.

The government had targeted a maximum rise of 3 percent, while chief economists surveyed by Yicai Global predicted the consumer price index to rise 2.88 percent. Prices rose 2.1 percent annually in 2018.

Prices rose 4.5 percent annually in December, slightly below the average 4.59 percent forecast from Yicai-surveyed chief economists. The consumer price index rose by the same amount in November, marking the fastest clip since January 2012 as food prices soared.
