China Is Germany's Biggest Source of Imports for Fourth Straight Year

(Yicai Global) March 22 -- Germany imported EUR106.2 billion (USD120.6 billion) of products from China in 2018, making it the European country's largest source of imports for the fourth consecutive year, according to data from the German Federal Statistical Office.

China ranked 35th among German's importers in 1980 before jumping to 10th in 2000, according to official stats. Germany imported EUR37.8 billion of electronic products from China last year, mainly computers, data storage devices and consumer electronics products, state-backed Xinhua News Agency reported today.

Data processing equipment, as well as electrical and optical products, are key good types that Germany imported from China last year, reflecting the importance of specialized production and free trade, Xinhua News Agency reported Christian Russ, a specialist at the Berlin-based non-profit academic institution the German Institute for Economic Research as saying.

The two countries' bilateral trade volume totaled more than EUR199 billion last year, 105-fold higher than that of four decades ago, highlighting the importance of economic cooperation between the two, a representative of the institute added.
