(Yicai Global) Sept. 8 -- China Mobile Ltd. [HKG:0941], the world's biggest mobile phone carrier, plans to accelerate the launch of its nationwide 5G network, aiming for 2020.
China Mobile has set up a 5G joint development center in Qingdao with 42 partners. As the center's three labs start rolling out their work, 5G vertical industries and new application scenarios are starting to develop outside the labs.
Partners include five telecom equipment makers -- Huawei Technologies Co., ZTE Corp., Datang Telecom Technology & Industry Group, Ericsson and Nokia Corp.; nine terminal and chipmakers such as Qualcomm Inc. and Intel Corp.; five instrument and apparatus makers such as Rohde & Schwarz and Keysight Technologies Inc.; and 18 vertical industry manufacturers such as Haier Co., Hisense Co., Sichuan Changhong Electric Co. and Audi. Its business-creation partners include five innovative startups in the vertical field such as Oviphone Technology Ltd.
At the next stage, China Mobile will continue its 5G research, launch large-scale network testing at the appropriate time, and work with partners to conduct application tests so as to further prepare for the future commercial use of 5G networks.
5G technology's peak rate will be dozens of times higher than that of 4G technology, rising to 10 gigabytes a second from 4G's 100 megabytes, China Mobile has said. In other words, it will take just a second to download more than 30 movies, and the network will support as many as one million users per square kilometer, making it possible for a massive number of users to connect to networks and facilitate the use of technology like the Internet of Things.
