(Yicai Global) Jan. 8 -- China has used ground and space resources to conduct carbon dioxide monitoring in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, which struggles with smog, Science and Technology Daily reported.

The Chinese Academy of Sciences complete the work on earth, while satellites that China launched earlier this year contributed from afar. The project was the first in the country to collect monitoring data from satellites and devices on automobiles.

The work on Earth covered central Beijing, Mentougou, Lingshan, Tianjin, Chengde, Zhangjiakou, Tangshan, Baoding and Xiong’an. Mini monitoring instruments on vehicles transmitted information to a center at the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Atmospheric Physics as automobiles traveled. Satellites surveyed from above.

“Combining these two data sets made our monitoring more accurate,” said Zeng Ning, the Chinese Academy of Sciences researcher who led the project.

The scheme helped scientists obtain more comprehensive concentration data in the region and will help them identify emission sources and plan reduction initiatives.
