China's Novel Phone Display Dominance Will Be Tested This Year, Agency Predicts China's Novel Phone Display Dominance Will Be Tested This Year, Agency Predicts

(Yicai Global) Feb. 12 -- China's mainland smartphone panel shipments made up more than half of the world's total for the first time last year but the new coronavirus epidemic is shaking up this year's market conditions, according to a Chinese market research firm.

The mainland's display shipments rose 16 percent from 2018 to account for 53.2 percent of the world's total last year amid slowing markets in Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea, CINNO Research wrote in a report released yesterday. However, the coronavirus outbreak may cause global shipments to drop by more than 2.3 percent this year, it added.

The new virus has claimed 1,114 lives in China and caused shops to remain closed during the Chinese New Year period that used to be busy with shopping and traveling.

China's smartphone sales will decline by about 9 percent to 350 million units from a year earlier this year if the virus outbreak can be contained by the end of this month, the agency predicted. If the epidemic continues as long as till the end of April, sales may fall by as much as 23 percent.

In the long-term, Chinese products are still competitive, according to chief industry analyst Zhou Hua. However, the kickoff of new South Korean smartphone product lines may be postponed, Zhou added.

Last year, global smartphone panel shipments fell 2.6 percent to 1.9 billion units.
