(Yicai Global) April 13 -- China remains the largest importer of Brazilian beef, though a rotten meat scandal last month has hit the latter's exports.
Brazil exported 331,800 tons of beef in the first quarter of this year, down seven percent from a year ago, with a total value of USD1.3 billion, down 3 percent yearly, Br-cn.com reported April 11, citing data from Abrafrigo, Brazil's association of beef producers. As major importers resume beef product purchases, Abrafrigo expects Brazilian beef exports to return to normal levels in April and May.
China is still the largest importer of Brazil beef, buying 118,900 tons from the country in the first quarter to account for 36 percent of Brazil's total beef exports. Brazilian beef exports to Hong Kong fell 23.7 percent to 66,000 tons in the first quarter, down from 86,500 tons a year ago. However, mainland Chinese imports continued to rise, up from 35,600 tons a year ago to 52,900 tons in the first quarter.
