(Yicai Global) March 16 – The China Confucius Foundation has established 1,800 Confucius Schools across the country to date, as part of efforts to enrich the population's knowledge of traditional culture.

The Jinan-based foundation aims to set up 10,000 schools in the long-term, Xinhua News Agency reported.

The foundation began building Confucius schools in 2014. The schools promote traditional Chinese culture, while also providing training in law, education and jobs.

Among the 1,800 schools, only 123 are located in countryside areas, said Kong Weike, Chairman of Shandong Painting Academy, adding that efforts need to be made to develop the rural community as an important front for inheriting and developing China's traditional culture.

Confucius Schools are not fully valued at present, Kong added, stating that they do not currently play role effectively. He proposes the integrated development of mainstream Confucius Schools into local cultural development causes and called for increased financial support.

Established in 1984, the China Confucius Foundation is a national cultural and academic foundation with a presence overseas. It established the Confucius Schools brand project in 2014. The foundation was originally based in philosopher Confucius' hometown of Qufu, eastern Shandong province, before relocating to provincial capital Jinan.
