(Yicai Global) May 8 -- The China Football Association(CFA) denied China will apply to host the 2034 World Cup.
The CFA has written a formal application to host the 2034 World Cup, Titan Sports Weekly reported today.
The Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) Congress will be held at Manama, Bahrain on May 11. The FIFA will discuss amending the curb on world cup hosts from the same federation hosting consecutive editions at the meeting, which would cut the interval to eight years from its current 12 years, per Titan Sports Weekly. If the proposal passes, China will qualify to bid for the 2030 World Cup, but this is the 100th anniversary of the event, and FIFA is planning to let the first World Cup host, Uruguay, stage the final again. China is thus most likely to make a play for World Cup 2034.
Chinese real estate company Dalian Wanda Group Co. last year became a top FIFA’s sponsor and this gave China an edge in winning the host competition.
The news gave a fillip to sports industry shares on China’s stock market, which performed well this morning. Lander Sports Development Co. Ltd [SHE:000558) and Ledman Optoelectronic Co.[SHE:300162] both rose 10 percent, respectively, to USD 1.59 (10.95 yuan) and 11.52 yuan, while China Sports Industry Co. [SHE:600158] rose 5.77%, to 15.57 yuan.
