China's Stock Markets Open Lower Amid Tourism Woes

(Yicai Global) Jan. 23 -- China's mainland stock markets began the day down as the coronavirus-caused pneumonia epidemic hit the hospitality and transport sectors.

The Shanghai Composite Index started 0.74 percent lower at 3,037.95. The Shenzhen Component Index was at 10,947.86, down 1.12 percent. The ChiNext Price Index, which tracks growth enterprises in Shenzhen, fell 1.03 percent to 1,973.33.

The hospitality sector dropped 2 percent, led by China United Travel [SHA:600358] which almost fell by the daily 10 percent limit. Aviation firms slid 1.5 percent with Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport [SHA:600004] falling as much as 4.31 percent.
