(Yicai Global) Dec. 21 -- China has overtaken the US as the country with most movie screens as its film market expands rapidly, according to official data.
China adds 26 silver screens every day to its already 40,917. The equivalent number in the US was 40,759 in May, according to America's National Association of Theater Owners.
Up to 85 percent of all new screens in China are 3D, a common standard in movie theater construction, according to state news agency Xinhua, which cited data from the Film Bureau of the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television. This year, each new movie theater has 5.6 auditoriums on average, meaning multi-screen cinemas have become the norm.
The increasing number of screens is in line with the continued rise in the country's box office takings, a representative from the Film Bureau said. China's film market has grown rapidly in recent years, attracting huge funding.
