(Yicai Global) June 4 -- China’s most-advanced onshore drilling rig, Crust 1, has set an Asian record for the deepest borehole following the completion of its first project.
The boring machine, developed by northeastern China’s Jilin University, completed the 7,018-meter-deep hole in a continental layer of rock dating back to the Cretaceous era some 66-145 million years ago, Xinhua News Agency reported.
Crust 1 represents a landmark in the development of China’s ultra-deep scientific drilling rig industry. The country is only the third country globally to master 10,000-meter drilling equipment and relevant technologies, following Russia and Germany.
Scientific drilling is a key method for undertaking research on the mysteries of the earth’s crust as well as seeking exploitable underground resources. The rig was manufactured by Honghua Petroleum Equipment, a unit of China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation.
