(Yicai Global) May 8 -- Chinese social video platform Douyin, known outside the country as Tik Tok, was downloaded more than 45 million times in the first quarter and outrivaled Facebook, YouTube and Instagram as the most popular iPhone app in the world, statistics from market researcher Sensor Tower show.
The data set Tik Tok in first place with an estimated 45.8 million downloads, followed by Alphabet Inc. unit Google’s YouTube with 35.3 million downloads for second place.
Facebook Inc. got the sixth ranking with 29.4 million downloads after three of its own apps -- WhatsApp (33.8 million downloads), Messenger (31.3 million) and Instagram (31 million) -- took the third to fifth spots.
Tik Tok is a music- and video-sharing freeware that allows users to create and edit short clips and add music and special effects to them. It debuted in foreign markets in the second half of last year and is now available in more than 150 countries, with more than 100 million monthly active users, its operator Beijing Videoworks Technology Co. announced.
The app is a leader in many overseas markets, including Japan, Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam and Cambodia, public information shows. Its European and American version Musical.ly is very popular in the US, Germany and France.
