(Yicai Global) May 15 -- China's President Xi Jinping met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing yesterday. Putin was in China to attend the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation held in Beijing over the weekend.
Xi Jinping said China and Russia are close neighbors, friends and partners. China and Russia maintain high level contact to further develop the comprehensive strategic partnership, and have made new achievements in cooperation in many fields.
Xi emphasized that developing and deepening China-Russia ties are the strategic choice for both countries. Both sides shall keep developing and maintaining their relationship regardless of changes in the international arena, deepen cooperation in traditional fields such as trade and energy, and implement key projects, while exploring new cooperation areas such as technology and innovation to yield more achievements and higher-level pragmatic collaboration, President Xi said.
China and Russia shall strengthen strategic coordination, jointly promote sustainable and stable growth in the world economy, work toward peaceful solution of hot-spot international and regional issues, and improve global governance system to inject more positive energy to peace and stability in the world.
Xi pointed out that in May 2015, China and Russia reached strategic consensus on synergizing the building of the Belt and Road with the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU), receiving positive response and support from other member states of the EEU. Over the past two years, the aligned cooperation has progressed steadily, with concrete results achieved. In the next stage, China is willing to jointly promote the synergized cooperation with Russia to continue to reap the benefits, and to deepen pragmatic collaboration with the Eurasian Economic Union to move forward related projects. China and Russia should join hands to create favorable conditions for the development of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and to help synergize the building of the Belt and Road with the Eurasian Economic Union.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the China-Russia Friendship Committee for Peace and Development and the 60th anniversary of the China-Russia Friendship Association. Both sides have formulated and implemented abundant activities and plans to enhance mutual understanding and friendship between the peoples of the two countries, and facilitate social and public bases for comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Russia.
Putin congratulated China on the successful opening of the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation, saying the Initiative proposed by China and the opening of the forum in the current international situation are very timely and will help promote economic exchanges and cooperation among countries. He said that China-Russia relations are developing at a high level, with frequent high-level exchanges between the two countries, close contacts between government departments and legislative bodies, rapid growth in bilateral trade and improved structure.
Russia is willing to work with China to synergize development strategies of the Silk Road Economic Belt with the Eurasian Economic Union to promote implementation of large cooperation projects. Both sides should deepen cooperation in trade, energy, manufacturing, education, local development, tourism, and sports. Active communication and coordination and mutual support on major international issues between Russia and China are an important stabilizing element for the international community, Putin noted.
Xi and Putin also exchanged views on the Korean Peninsula and other international and regional issues of common concern.
