(Yicai Global) Nov. 10 -- Dicos, a brand owned by Ting Hsin International Group, has opened its first unstaffed, self-service restaurant in Shanghai. With smart screens replacing traditional cashier counters, customers can select food, place orders and make payment via WeChat and pick up food themselves, Qdaily.com reported today.
The restaurant is on the first floor of the group's Shanghai headquarters. It has 12 food pickup windows, with each window equipped with a smart screen. After food is prepared, an attendant will place it behind the food pickup window. The smart screen will become black before returning to the keyboard mode, under which customers can enter their passwords. At the same time, consumers will receive a food pickup message and a password via WeChat and can pick up food by entering their passwords on the screens.
Smart screens can help save labor costs associated with cashiers and attendants. Compared with traditional restaurants, Dicos' future restaurants can save 30 percent of labor costs, it said.
Dicos' preliminary plan is to allow customers to select food via WeChat at more than half of its 2,300 restaurants across China earlier next year, starting with first- and second-tier cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou.
