Four Staff Die, Four Hurt in Wanhua Chemical Blast

(Yicai Global) Sept. 21 -- Wanhua Chemical Group Ltd. [SHA:600309] said today that four workers died and four were injured in an explosion on company premises.

A buffer tank containing crude MDI burst and its contents ignited at 5.22 pm yesterday during a plant overhaul in the company's industrial-park base in the eastern coastal city of Yantai, Shandong province. Site testing detected no pollution to the local environment nor any secondary disasters.

A petrochemical producer, Wanhua Chemical is among the most competitive global manufacturers of methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) – a volatile compound used to rigidify polyurethane foam -- and Europe's largest supplier of toluene diisocyanate (TDI) -- another unstable organic isocyanate compound that preserves the flexibility of polyurethane foam.
