Guangzhou to Prep Housing, Transport for a City Bigger Than Shanghai by 2035 Guangzhou to Prep Housing, Transport for a City Bigger Than Shanghai by 2035

(Yicai Global) June 14 -- Southern China's Guangzhou will add housing and transport infrastructure to prepare for a population of 25 million by 2035, five million more than the expected.

Guangzhou will kick off more than 2 million urban housing projects in 17 years, meaning nearly 120,000 new projects each year, among which no less than 20 percent will be for rental housing, the regional government released in its plan.

The city's permanent population was 14.9 million at the end of last year. Beijing has 21.5 million residents, and Shanghai 24.2 million.

Guangzhou is stepping up its efforts to develop its information technology, artificial intelligence, biotechnology prowess while keeping production and housing costs low, which may attract a large number of migrants to move into the region, Peng Yu, vice president of a policy think tank in Guangdong province, told Yicai Global.

Guangzhou will nearly quadruple its urban rail transit network to cover 2,000 kilometers by 2035. The city has planned six high-speed railway routes with a length of over 600 km to connect to nearby areas.
