(Yicai Global) Feb 13 -- Microsoft Corp. founder Bill Gates opened a public account on WeChat, China's most popular social networking site, over the weekend. Greeting WeChat users in broken Chinese, Gates said in a 30-second introductory video, "I hope people can join the conversation."
Gates aims to share "the people I meet, the books I am reading and what I am learning." His video, in which he greets users by saying "Hello, welcome to my WeChat account," has already attracted more than 100,000 viewers.
His account is run by Bo Rui Zhi Consulting Co., with US consulting firm Global Health Strategies as one of its major shareholders, the account's registration details show. Several senior managers of Global Health worked with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
Gates is no stranger to China's social media scene. He opened his personal account on Sina Weibo, China's Twitter-like social networking platform, in 2010, and has 3.2 million followers. Most of his Weibo posts include Gates Foundation updates.
