Huawei Should Be Open About AI Research, Founder Says

(Yicai Global) Sept. 27 -- Huawei Technologies Co. should be open about research into artificial intelligence to avoid isolation and work with the best in the business, founder Mr. Ren Zhengfei said.

Mr. Ren made the comment at a recent internal forum at Shenzhen-based Huawei where he spoke about the company's AI strategy. In the field of machine learning, there must be a lot of learning software that is far beyond that of Huawei, he said.

He said many companies and research institutes around the world are very competitive in terms of research and development capabilities, while in terms of integration, Huawei is best. So there is no need to be fearful about being open, he said.

In addition, he said Huawei will not focus on commercial AI products or commodities, which are major businesses for other companies and only sidelines for Huawei. Huawei can buy other companies' products. Mr. Ren also noted that some Internet companies achieve fragmented innovation and lack overall competitiveness.

According to Mr. Ren, AI is one of the most important tools for managing networks, which have become larger and more complex. AI should be seen as highly important and be given a good deal of attention. Huawei will put emphasis on making a big platform and formulating a structure that can provide long-term support.
