(Yicai Global) March 16 -- China aims to develop plans on how best to present and promote its ultra-fast fifth-generation (5G) mobile network technologies at the Beijing Winter Olympics in 2022.
Officials at the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology met yesterday with representatives from the Beijing Organizing Committee for the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games to discuss the next steps, the ministry said today. Views were exchanged on various topics, including the use of 5G at the games and the development of the winter sports equipment sector.
The country should seize the historic opportunity offered by the Beijing games to promote the rapid development of related sectors such as winter sports equipment and information technology and telecoms, participants in the meeting said. It is necessary to highlight the leading role of 5G and incorporate its technologies into the games, they said.
China is expected to mass-commercialize 5G technologies by 2020, according to a ministry blueprint. The country used to trail behind in the development of cutting-edge technologies, but it is now set to take the lead in 5G, state news agency Xinhua reported earlier this month, adding that experts in the field point out that Chinese businesses own about half of the world’s 5G-related patents.
Beijing will host the 2022 Winter Olympics in February of the same year. Apart from the capital, two other venues are planned at nearby Yanqing and Zhangjiakou. Beijing will host the opening and closing ceremonies as well as the ice sports competitions, the International Olympic Committee has said.
