Local Environment Chief Tastes Water Made Potable at Hebei Steel Plant's Sewage Facility

(Yicai Global) Jan. 23 -- Si Guoliang, director of Xingtai Environmental Protection Bureau in the northern Chinese province of Hebei, yesterday drank water purified in Delong Steel Ltd.'s sewage treatment system in front of dozens of reporters.

The quality of circulating water is superior to the first grade of national drinking water after advanced treatment, according to staff at the plant. Listed in Singapore, Delong Steel is a large-scale private steel complex integrating sintering, iron making, steelmaking and metal rolling.

Xingtai once ranked bottom among the 74 cities that require focused monitoring of air quality. The city's environmental data has been improved through the joint efforts of the local government and companies.

Public data shows that the number of days with standard air quality was 173, up 33 from 2015 and a jump of 135 from 2013. The number of days with heavy pollution was still 42, down 8 from 2015 and 105 fewer than in 2013.
