Pony Ma Says Tencent Will Store Significant Amount of Data in South China to Ensure Digital Ecosystem

(Yicai Global) May 28 -- Tencent's newly-built data center in Gui'an, the southern Guiyang province, has started Phase I trial operation and significant data will be stored there in the future, said Pony Ma, chief executive officer of Tencent Holdings.

Speaking at the China International Big Data Industry Expo 2018 in Guizhou, capital of Guiyang, Ma said mobile data, open network and smart system are essential to a digital ecosystem, underlying the importance of the extent, depth and precision of digital development.

As for its extent, digital development has been covering every aspect of society, from individual users to institutional ones including businesses and governments, Ma said. A wider digitalization will bring more opportunities for innovation.

Ma cited a smartphone app about sightseeing in Yunnan as an example. By opening the app, mini programs and official accounts, one can travel in Yunnan with ease. The project offers five digital solutions to visitors, namely dining, accommodation, commuting, sightseeing and shopping in the touristic province.

The app connects millions of visitors with dozens of government departments and thousands of merchants. Visitors can complain to the supervision departments with a single touch. The merchants' trading behavior and other details will also be recorded, in an effort to address the problem of overcharge in touristic areas.

In terms of depth of digital development, each vertical field is very deep and specialized, he said. The transformation of digitalization needs the in-depth fusion of digital technology and industry experience. Pointing to the industrial Internet as an example, Ma said Tencent had in-depth cooperation and exploration with Sany Group and Foxconn Technology Group in this field in the past.

Tencent will utilize various information technology methods to analyze the whole-chain data in industrial production. Tencent intends to connect such data with business WeChat, its popular social messaging app. Through the mini program platform in business WeChat, one can control every step in production process at any time in the future, Ma said.

As far as precision is concerned, internet plus healthcare is a case in point, he said. WeChat urban service platform has been introduced in more than 300 cities across China, serving over 400 million people in total. It provides various general services including information publication, certification handling by police and payment. It also features local projects.
