Ransomware Strikes Nearly 100 Countries, Leaves Millions of Chinese Trapped in 'Graduation Crisis'

(Yicai Global) May 14 -- WannaCry, a new worm-like ransomware, fanned out across the globe on the evening of May 12.

It raided government and public network systems, and seriously impaired the functions of many schools and hospitals.

China's education network was worst-hit by the hacker invasion, with many teaching systems beaten into paralysis. The mega-scale cyber-attack is thought to have been propagated worldwide using the hacker weapon 'Eternal Blue' that the US National Security Agency (NSA) leaked. A blackmail program, WannaCry has targeted the computer systems of tens of thousands of information services networks in nearly 100 countries, including the UK, the US, China, Russia, Spain and Italy, demanding users pay USD300 in cryptocurrency Bitcoin as ransom.

The software has blackmailed 26 million college students and ensnared 8 million graduates unable to access dissertations in a 'graduation crisis,' per data from 360.cn. A source in cybersecurity told Yicai Global that "China only has 8 million graduates each year and it is impossible that all of them were blackmailed. Therefore, the reliability of this data remains to be verified." The source did, however, concede the severity of the impact of the massive hack-attack.
