(CBN Global) March 21 -- Chinese internet giant, Tencent Holdings Ltd. [HKG:0700]'s news app is the most popular Chinese news app with 38.2 percent of active users. Tencent News also has 37.5 percent of all active subscribers in the mobile information industry, CBN has learned from data analysis company iiMedia Research.
News apps are the main source of current affairs information for Chinese mobile netizens. Tencent News subscribers read for an average of 19 minutes a day, and more than one-third of them spend half an hour or longer perusing the news. This is around twice as much time spent on the second most-popular site UC Headlines. Subscribers to other newsreader apps browse for between six and 15 minutes on average, according to statistics from online audience measurement provider iResearch.
However, iResearch's statistics were called into question last month by Today's Headlines, another popular Chinese mobile news app. iResearch had reported that Today's Headlines had 'several million' daily active subscribers. However Today's Headlines said that reports from other third-party data agencies, including TalkingData, TrustData and QuestMobile, had put Today's Headlines' daily active users at over 30 million.
