Tesla Clients Who Ordered Before China Price Cuts Suspect Upselling Behind Compensation Tesla Clients Who Ordered Before China Price Cuts Suspect Upselling Behind Compensation

(Yicai Global) March 5 -- Tesla is trying to make amends with Chinese customers who bought their vehicles just before the US electric carmaker slashed prices in China. Some of them, however, suspect sneaky sales tactics.

Tesla will provide two kinds of compensation plans for those clients who booked their vehicles before Feb. 28 but have not yet received their cars, Tencent News reported today. The carmaker has offered to upgrade these customers' cars from enhanced autopilot into full self-driving capacity for free. In the second option, they may choose to activate the discount but in that case they need to pay additional fees for either of the two autonomous driving functions.

Some consumers suspect that the measures are prompted by the firm's efforts to sell more of its services instead of offering reimbursements, according to the report.

California-based Tesla slashed its prices on March 1 by almost 15 percent on average with the sports utility vehicle Model X seeing the biggest cut of 28 percent from CNY950,000 (USD142,000) to CNY777,000.

The firm also released a new refund policy today. Within seven days after delivery, customers can return the vehicle with a full refund in case the mileage is less than 1,600 kilometers. These drivers can also obtain half-priced upgrades from autopilot to full self-driving. The latter option costs CNY65,000 (USD9,700), according to the company's website.
