(Yicai Global) April 18 – 'The Fast and the Furious' franchise is making it to the cinema history by breaking new box office records with its latest edition, 'The Fate of the Furious.' It is on the path to becoming one of the most successful box-office openings in its first week, grossing USD525 million worldwide.
Its box-office takings in the Chinese mainland have topped CNY1.5 billion (USD218 million). The eighth in the series, it has shattered many records in the Chinese movie industry, ranging from midnight showings to opening day and weekend box office receipts.
It is now just a matter of time before 'The Fast and the Furious 8" beats the total ticket sales (USD2.43 billion) of the previous installment in the mainland market. The only suspense left is whether it will outrank 'The Mermaid,' a fantasy romantic comedy film directed by Stephen Chow that raked in CNY3.3 billion at the box office, and rose to the No. 1 spot in China's movie market.
