(Yicai Global) April 12 -- Chinese social media giant Weibo Corp. launched a three-month special cleanup operation to purge illegal content from short video and live-streaming broadcast platforms Miaopai and Yizhibo, Weibo said yesterday in an announcement.
Weibo is mainly targeting insalubrious and vulgar content and that at odds with core socialist values.
Yizhibo removed 1,536 live broadcasts suspected of being hosted by minors and closed 320 accounts with serious violations. Miaopai removed 19,898 harmful videos and nixed 96 accounts. Weibo has deleted 1,037 items with inimical information involving minors and 28,544 with musical content, closing 41 related accounts, Weibo said.
Weibo is an investor in Miaopai, a short video sharing app embedded in Weibo’s broadcast platform. Yizhibo is a live broadcast platform Weibo and Miaopai inaugurated in May 2016.
Several live and short video broadcast applications have come under the lens over their illegal and unhealthy content since April. China's radio and television administration talked with the heads of Toutiao and Kuaishou on April 4 to demand comprehensive rectification. The Huoshan and Kuaishou video-sharing apps were removed from Android download on April 5 and have not yet been restored.
The Android App Store suspended Toutiao download for three weeks on April 9, Phoenix News for two weeks, NetEase News for one week and Tiantian Kuaibao for three days.
Toutiao closed five channels dedicated to quotes, jokes, silly videos, photos, and memes yesterday, while the comments sections in the Douyin and Xigua Video platforms under Toutiao have been removed completely, with only the comment features for Xigua Video and Huoshan embedded in Toutiao still functioning as the spring cleaning goes on.
