Deadly Virus Isn't Seen Curbing Holiday Travel in China. Quite the Opposite Deadly Virus Isn't Seen Curbing Holiday Travel in China. Quite the Opposite

(Yicai Global) Jan. 23 -- People in China are expected to take a rising number of trips during the upcoming Chinese New Year holiday despite the spreading coronavirus-caused pneumonia.

The number of trips is likely to increase annually by 2 percent to 1.87 million per day during the holiday period that starts tomorrow and ends on Jan. 30, the State Immigration Administration said in a statement yesterday.

The estimate signals that the outbreaks of the deadly virus, starting from Central China's Wuhan, have not caused too many travelers to cancel their holiday plans.

Zhuhai's Gongbei Port and Hengqin Port are expected to boost their passenger flows by as much as 14 percent and 7 percent from a year ago.

Aviation bases, except for that of Wuhan, are likely to follow suit. Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport should accommodate 7.7 percent more arrivals and departures. The boost should be 7 percent for Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport, 5.9 percent for Beijing Capital International Airport, and 2 percent for Shanghai Pudong International Airport.

Airports seek to handle the large passenger flows efficiently by keeping their immigration lines down to a maximum of 30 minutes for Chinese citizens.
