Xiaomi, Huawei IP Dispute to Go to Court at End of July Xiaomi, Huawei IP Dispute to Go to Court at End of July

(Yicai Global) July 4 -- The dispute between Chinese smartphone makers Xiaomi and Huawei Technologies over intellectual property rights will go to court at the end of the month.

The two parties will present their cases in a screen lock method and mobile terminal dispute in court on July 21, the China National Intellectual Property Administration announced today.

In January, Huawei claimed that Xiaomi infringed four of its patents in China. Afterward, Xiaomi asked the Chinese patent office to nullify Huawei’s patent on a screen lock method and mobile terminal.

“We are negotiating about patent license and using different regulation regimes to reach an agreement,” Beijing-based Xiaomi said about the dispute with Huawei, which has not commented on the matter.

Huawei gained around USD1.2 billion to USD1.3 billion from patent licensing globally between 2019 and 2021. The Shenzhen-based firm began to charge fifth-generation communications network patent licensing fees in 2021, with rates starting from USD2.50 per smartphone, depending on the devices’ selling prices, according to Huawei.

Xiaomi released its first IP white paper on Dec. 14, last year. According to the document, the firm has applied for an average of nearly 6,000 patents per year since 2015. Xiaomi is involved in many complicated IP disputes.
