(Yicai Global) Jan. 28 -- A total of 50,000 hazmat suits arrived at a Shanghai airport at 2 a.m. local time today and will be distributed in Shanghai, Wuhan and other cities to help in the fight against the novel coronavirus, news website Eastday reported.

The protective clothing, supplied by Fosun Group as part of its global emergency procurement and allocation, is reported to be the first batch of overseas supplies to arrive in Shanghai.

Another 100,000 masks bought from India will also arrive at Shanghai Pudong International Airport today, according to the report.

Some of the hazmat suits, which can protect against particulates and liquid splashes,  will be shipped directly to Wuhan, the city at the center of the outbreak of the pneumonia-causing 2019-nCoV virus,  and are expected to arrive tonight after a quick customs clearance, the report added.

Xu Xiaoliang, co-president of Fosun International, told Eastday that the Shanghai-based company has purchased nearly 600,000 medical supplies worldwide, including more than 330,000 surgical masks and over 270,000 protective suits.

"Fosun will try to ensure all the supplies arrive in China as quickly as possible and donate to assist prevention and control of the epidemic," Xu said.

Customs officers at Pudong airport are now on call 24 hours a day. Steps have been taken to bolster the fight against the virus such as the opening of green channels and the immediate release of items needed to control the epidemic.
