6G to Be Commercially Available Around 2030, Expert Predicts(Yicai) March 10 -- Sixth-generation network technology is expected to achieve commercial use around 2030, when related standards will be issued, according to a chief scientist at China Information and Communications Technology Mobile Communication Technology.
Under the organization and coordination of the International Telecommunication Union, the global telecommunication industry has reached a consensus on the development trends, application scenarios, and key requirements for 6G technology, with related standards expected to be released in 2030, Sun Shaohui said at an event held by the Shanghai Stock Exchange yesterday.
"Compared to fifth-generation network technology, 6G incorporates three major application scenarios, which are sensing-communication integration, artificial intelligence-communication integration, and space-air-ground integration," Tong En, chief expert at China Mobile Communications Group, said at the event.
6G deeply integrates communication, sensing, computing, and intelligence capabilities, achieving comprehensive coverage across space, air, and ground, Tong noted. It allows the flexible loading of software functionalities related to communication, sensing, computing, and intelligence on the same physical infrastructure, transforming the communication network into a platform and foundation for aggregating service capabilities, he added.
The application of 6G technology will significantly enhance traditional communication performances, such as communication speed, latency, and the number of connections, according to Tong. Moreover, it will expand network service capabilities, enabling customized and personalized allocation and services.
China has already achieved a global advantage in terms of 5G standards, products, network deployment scale, and applications, Tong said. However, to secure a leading position in 6G technology, the country will have to address challenges from various aspects, including applications, technology, standards, industry, and network deployment.
China initiated the research and development of 6G standard technology in 2018. Its first official 6G project was launched in September 2024, marking the transition from technological research to standardization and industrialization.
