Alibaba’s Cainiao Builds Southeast Asia’s Biggest Fully Automated Warehousing System Alibaba’s Cainiao Builds Southeast Asia’s Biggest Fully Automated Warehousing System

(Yicai Global) Jan. 28 -- Cainiao Network Technology has finished constructing an automated warehousing project for leading Thai courier Flash Express which is the largest in the region and will greatly speed up deliveries of online shopping, the logistics arm of e-commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding said today.

The unmanned warehouse can process 6,000 parcels a day and this can rise to 20,000 a day during peak season, the Hangzhou-based firm said. Cainiao used flexible automation technology to enable the warehouse to adjust capacity according to the actual number of orders.

E-commerce platforms in Southeast Asia, such as Lazada and Shopee, have seen a rapid rise in business during the Covid-19 era. But their storage and logistics systems have not been able to keep up.

Chinese consumers can receive deliveries within minutes of purchase during big sales promotions but Thai customers need to wait for a week or more, said Han Lei, storage manager at Bangkok-based Flash Express.

Recognizing that Thailand’s e-commerce logistics is about five to 10 years behind China, Flash Express began to look for a supplier to upgrade its warehousing system early last year and chose Cainiao. Flash Express has over 2,000 outlets in the country and delivers more than two million parcels a day.
